Situated in North Carolina, Hatteras has a distinctly relaxed feel to it, and this is the type of vacation they want to promote. Surrounded by sandy beaches, it's quiet demeanor hides plenty of opportunities to stretch your wings if you wish.


Some people want to go on holiday to get away from the stresses, to just kick back and relax, and Hatteras certainly fits the bill for this. Seafood is obviously big on the menu, and if you've never tasted really fresh fish, then you would be in for a treat!

Maybe you'd be after a romantic beach bonfire - this would be no problem as beach bonfires are allowed with no need for a licence below the high tide level. An adult does need to be present, but that's a given anyway.

If you want to go horseback riding for the first time, this could be your opportunity, or if sightseeing is your thing did you know that Hatteras has the tallest brick lighthouse in the whole of the US? At 208 feet, it still works to warn ships just as it has since 1870.

In fact in 1999 it was moved inland due to the encroachment of the sea! It's a great view from the top and you need to be there between Easter and Columbus Day to be able to climb up inside.

There are tours available around Hatteras and the neighboring islands of Ocracoke and Roanoke, taken by a lifelong Hatteras resident. Let's not forget the obvious activities you'd expect at a beach location - the sea based ones! From surfing to boating to wreck diving.

Hatteras is child and pet friendly, although do not expect to have your dog running free along the beach - this is an on-the-spot fine, to protect the peace of other holiday makers. With plenty of hotels , guest houses and vacation rentals, there really is nothing missed off the list of things you might want for a holiday.

You might even want to have your wedding there, and you won't be surprised to find that this is provided for.

Is Hatteras built around tourism?

Yes. However, do not make the mistake of thinking it's a theme park.

Far from it, and the relaxed feel really does make a Hatteras Island Beach Vacation one to consider.
