Best family beach vacations, there is just too many options to choose from. That's hardly a surprise, but it does sometimes make the decision seem overwhelming. The best idea is to dismiss the negatives and focus on what you actually want, and then go looking for it...

The US has a massive coastline, and you can look at any map of the world to see coastlines in country after country. One of the first choices you should make is whether you want to go abroad or stay home. This will narrow your choice right away, and cut out huge amounts of pondering and indecision.

Once you have made that first decision, the next thing to consider is what exactly you and your family want to get out of the vacation.

For example, if you have younger children, you may want a theme park type location, which will not only keep them occupied, but excited as well. Theme parks offer plenty for the adults too, but the downsides are the cost which can soon mount up, and the fact that it's so hectic you may come home feeling like you need another holiday!

If the children are younger, you can go for the more relaxed option if you wish, as the younger ones are quite happy pottering about in pools looking for crabs, or building sandcastles on the beach.

If you have older children, then maybe you could go for a mixture of the relaxed and activity. Most family beach vacations will offer watersports, so the kids can try their hand at surfing or sailing, or maybe they want to enjoy some horse riding, either on the beach or inland.

It could be that the whole family just wants to lounge by the pool! If that's the case, you don't actually need to go to the coast to do that, but there is a psychological aspect to the fact that being by the sea equals being 'on vacation' - even if you never even look at the sea, never mind go near it!

So to sum up, use the 'abroad or stay in the country' decision first, and then focus on what you need to get from the vacation, so that you can narrow down your search before you've even started.
